ABOUT PHUKET

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand. It is known for it’s stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife that reflects a blend of tradition and modernity.

Phuket’s history goes back to the 13th century when the Sukothai kingdom gained control of the island after sweeping aside the strong Srivijaya Empire’s hold on the island.

European traders (Portuguese) arrival on the island in the 16th century marked a new chapter in Phuket’s history. The island has tin deposits which attracted foreign interest that lead to mining operations. The Dutch East India Company set up a tin trading post in the 17th century which open the door to international trade for the island.

The most notable event in Phuket’s history was the defense against a Burmese invasion in 1785. Local heroines Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon were the 2 main persons organizing defense for the island against the invaders. Their sacrifice and success is commemorated with a monument in the Phuket Town area. Phuket began as a tourist destination in the 1970s.

ATTRACTIONS IN PHUKET

• Patong Beach is the busiest beach on the island with high levels of commercial activities and banking facilities. Patong Beach is popular among tourist from the nearby Asian countries as well as European countries. Bangla Road transforms after dark into a lively district filled with clubs, beach bars and live music. A unique attraction in Phuket are the live shows like Simon Cabaret, Aqua Circus, Carnival Magic, e.t.c. They are dazzling performance featuring elaborate costumes and talents from the island’s mix gender community.
•  The Kata Noi, Au Nang and Karon beach area.
• Phang Nga Bay is known for it’s emerald waters and limestone cliffs. A boat tour can be arranged for a visit to James Bond Island (featured in the movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”).
• The Big Buddha monumental statue stands at 45 meters tall atop Nakkerd Hill.
• Wat Chalong is the largest Buddhist temple in Phuket.
• The Phuket main town area has Sino Portuguese architecture and vibrant street art.
• Thalang Road comes alive during the weekend with street markets offering food and unique handicrafts.
• The Sunday Walking Street Market (called Lard Yai in Thai language) showcases local artisans and food vendors.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT PHUKET

The best time of the year to visit Phuket is between November and February. This period brings warm dry weather that is ideal for outdoor activities. This period is also the peak tourist season in Phuket.

PHUKET DO’S AND DON’TS

• Use the Wai greeting: Press your palms together in front of your chest and bow slightly to greet others especially elders and monks.
• Dress modestly at temples: Cover shoulders and knees. Carry a scarf or shawl just in case.
• Remove shoes before entering homes or temples
• Speak calmly and politely: Add “ka” (for women) or “krub” (for men) to the end of sentences to sound respectful when speaking the Thai language.
• Use both hands when giving or receiving items: Especially when interacting with elders or officials.
• Show respect to monks: Avoid physical contact especially if you’re a woman. Don’t hand items directly but place it in front of them.
• Support local businesses: Choose traditional markets and handmade goods over mass produced souvenirs.
• Don’t touch anyone’s head: The head is considered sacred.
• Don’t Point the soles of your feet at people or buddha statues: The sole of the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body. Try not to seat cross legged but with both feet straight on the ground.
• Never disrespect the royal family: Criticism is not only offensive but is illegal under Thailand laws.
