ABOUT PATTAYA

Pattaya is a vibrant seaside city located on the eastern Gulf coast of Thailand. It is known for it’s stunning beaches and exciting nightlife. Pattaya first began as a small fishing village and local trade. The village’s serene environment and beautiful beaches began attracting a few adventurous travelers.

The turning point in Pattaya’s local economy came during the Vietnam War. American servicemen stationed at nearby bases discovered Pattaya as a destination for rest and relaxation. This influx of military personnel brought foreign currency and demand for goods and services that lead to rapid development of Pattaya.

On 29 November 1978 the Thai government officially granted city status to Pattaya and this solidified it’s position as a tourist destination.

ATTRACTIONS IN PATTAYA

• Pattaya Beach with it’s soft white sands and clear blue waters is a popular choice for tourists. One can indulge in activities like jet skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides
• For a quieter escape Jomtien Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere with beach side restaurants and bars to unwind and enjoy the stunning sunset scene.
• The Sanctuary of Truth is an impressive temple built entirely of wood. This architectural marvel stands at 105 meters tall.
• The Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden is a breathtaking attraction covering over 500 acres. Visitors can enjoy the traditional Thai dance performance and even take an elephant rides.
• Pattaya’s vibrant nightlife at Walking Street comes alive after dark with its array of bars, clubs, and entertainment options. Live music, cabaret shows and dance performances can be found here. The street is lined with colorful neon lights and bustling crowds.
• The Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark is a fantastic destination for family style entertainment. Featuring numerous water slides, wave pools, and themed zones based on popular Cartoon Network characters.
• Pattaya Floating Market wholly built on stilts over water is another place for family visits to see traditional Thai crafts, foods, and cultures from different ethnicity and regions of the country. Visitors can hire a boat and navigate the market on boat.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT PATTAYA

The best time of the year to visit Pattaya is from November to February when the weather is dry. Daily temperatures range from 23C to 30C (73F to 86F). This is also the peak tourist period.

PATTAYA DO’S AND DON’TS

• Use the Wai greeting Press your palms together in front of your chest and bow slightly to greet others especially elders and monks.
• Dress modestly at temples Cover shoulders and knees. Carry a scarf or shawl just in case.
• Remove shoes before entering homes or temples
• Speak calmly and politely Add “ka” (for women) or “krub” (for men) to the end of sentences to sound respectful.
• Use both hands when giving or receiving items Especially when interacting with elders or officials.
• Show respect to monks Avoid physical contact, especially if you’re a woman. Don’t hand items directly but place it in front of them.
• Support local businesses Choose traditional markets and handmade goods over mass produced souvenirs.
• Don’t touch anyone’s head The head is considered sacred.
• Don’t Point the soles of your feet at people or buddha statues The sole of the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body. Try not to seat cross legged but with both feet straight on the ground.
• Never disrespect the royal family Criticism is not only offensive but is illegal under Thailand laws.
