ABOUT GOA

Goa is India’s smallest state located on the western coast. The state is known for it’s stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife and rich cultural heritage. Goa is is nestled between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Spanning an area of about 3,700 square kilometers with a coastline of approximately 101 kilometers.

Goa was once a Portuguese colony. Goa became part of India in 1962. It’s colonial past is reflected in its architecture and cultural practice. The Goa culture is a blend of Indian and Portuguese influences. This is evident in the local music, dance and festivals.

BRIEF HISTORY OF GOA

In 1510 a Portuguese Genral Afonso de Albuquerque defeated the Sultan of Bijapur and captured this state. This was the beginning of a nearly 450 years Portuguese rule. Under Portuguese administration she flourished economically as a trading hub for spices, textiles, and precious stones. This also lead to the construction of churches and the establishment of Christian educational institutions here.

The state has two distinct regions in the North (known for its bustling party scene and beautiful beaches like Anjuna and Baga) and South (serene and tranquil beaches such as Palolem and Agonda). The Western Ghats is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT GOA

The best time to visit this coastal paradise is between November and February. These months have pleasantly cool weather with temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. This months also coincides with the numerous music festivals, carnivals, and local events. The carnival (in February) is an explosion of color and revelry that showcase the state’s Portuguese colonial legacy. The monsoon season is from June to September with heavy short 5 – 30 minutes rainfall.

ATTRACTIONS IN GOA

This region is rich with numerous historical sites like –

• Basilica of Bom Jesus (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The church is the final resting place of St Francis Xavier)
• Fort Aguada (17th century Portuguese fort), the 4 tiered Dudhsagar waterfall. 
• Anjuna and Mapusa flea market provide a glimpse to the local crafts and culinary delights.

The population is a blend of various ethnicity and cultures which is reflected in its rich traditions, festivals, and cuisine. The majority of with the population is comprised of the Konkani people. Other significant communities include the Marathi with the rest being Portuguese and other European descendants. This diverse ethnic cultures coexists harmoniously with festival celebrations like Diwali, Christmas, and Shigmo taking place here.

Moving around here is easy. Taxi and e-hailing rides are plentiful. Another way of getting around is on a rented scooter. Many resorts and hotels also operate their own shuttle van service.

The Indian Rupee (INR) note currency is denominated in 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 2000 while coins are in various denominations from 1 to 10. Currency exchange can be made at bank ATM and money changers. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most commercial establishments. It is however advisable to pay cash for small purchases from street vendors and at the local markets.
