ABOUT CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. It was devastated by an earthquake in 2011 and has since undergone reconstruction and revitalization. 

Historically it is believed the Moa hunters first arrived around AD 1000 to clear the forests and hunt. Ngati Mamoe and later Ngai Tahu settled here between 1500–1700. The area became a rich food gathering ground, especially around the Avon and Heathcote Rivers. Ōtautahi is the Māori name for Christchurch given by a chief named Tautahi. Christchurch was later founded in 1850 by the Canterbury Association. It’s purpose was to create an Anglican settlement. The first settlers arrived on ships like the Charlotte Jane. Christchurch became New Zealand’s first city by royal charter in 1856

ATTRACTIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH

• Christchurch Botanic Gardens established in 1863 and cover over 21 hectares. It is home to a vast variety of plants, trees and flowers from the region.
• The START Mall (Container Mall) was completely reconstructed after the 2011 earthquake, housing a variety of shops, cafes and art installations.
• The Canterbury Museum, located near the Botanic Gardens, houses extensive collection of natural and cultural history of the region. Exhibits range from Māori artifacts to Antarctic exploration highlighting New Zealand’s rich heritage.
• The Cardboard Cathedral (made mainly from cardboard tubes) is a architectural marvel designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban erected in 2013 following the destruction of the original Christ Church Cathedral. Cathedral services, concerts, and community events are frequently held here.
• Port Hills has breathtaking views with outdoor adventure for nature lovers. Hiking and biking trails wind through the hills with panoramic views of the city, the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains. Refreshments are available at the popular Summit Road and Sign of the Kiwi café located here.
• The Arts Center, located in the historic school buildings, houses artist studios, shops and a weekend market.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT CHRISTCHURCH

The best time to visit Christchurch is between November and April.

• March and April are ideal for excellent weather conditions and fewer crowds.
• January, February and December are also great months but they are peak tourist season.
  
• September to November and autumn months of March to May are also recommended for those who prefer milder weather.

CHRISTCHURCH DO’S AND DON’TS

Dos-

• Greet with a smile – A friendly “Kia ora” (hello in Maori) is always appreciated.
• Respect Māori culture – Learn a few basic phrases, follow marae (meeting house) protocols and remove shoes if asked.
• Be eco‑conscious – Kiwis take environmental care seriously. Use recycling bins, avoid littering and stick to marked trails.
• Queue politely – Whether at a café or bus stop, wait your turn without pushing ahead or cutting queue.
• Drive carefully – Keep left, obey speed limits, and be mindful of winding rural roads.
• Tip modestly – Not expected but rounding up the bill or leaving small change for great service is fine.

Don’ts –

• Don’t disrespect sacred sites – Avoid climbing or touching culturally significant objects without permission.
• Don’t compare to Australia – Friendly rivalry exists; constant comparisons can get annoying.
• Don’t ignore biosecurity rules – Declare all food, plants and outdoor gear at customs to protect NZ’s fragile ecosystem.
• Don’t litter or damage nature – Even small item can harm wildlife and landscapes.
• Don’t be overly loud in public – Kiwis value a relaxed, low‑key atmosphere.
• Don’t expect big city hours everywhere – Shops and restaurants in smaller towns may close early (5 pm).
