ABOUT MALDIVES

Maldives is an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands grouped in 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean located south of India and southwest of Sri Lanka. Maldives is known for it’s crystal clear waters and idyllic white sandy beaches making it a popular summer playground for residents from the nearby European countries.

ATTRACTIONS IN MALDIVES

    • The North Male Atoll is the premier atoll where the Male International Airport is located as well as the country’s capital city of Male. Most luxurious 5 stars resorts are found at this main atoll. The North Male atoll is famous for it’s vibrant coral reefs and diverse underwater ecosystems.
    • The Addu Atoll features some of the country’s best diving spots. Resorts are also located in other atolls like South Male atoll, Ari atoll, Baa atoll (a UNESCO biosphere reserve), Lhaviyani atoll, Noonu atoll, Meemu atoll and Vaavu atoll.
    • The National Museum (Male Atoll) built in the 17th century. Showcase in the museum includes a 11th century buddha head.

    • A day trip to a local village to mingle amongst the locals and to shop at the local bazaar would be an unforgettable experience. Hotels can make this arrangement with a local guide.

    • The Whale Submarine tour (Male Atoll) is a 45 minutes dive to a depth of about 40 feet below sea level. It is an excellent eye opener to see marine creatures in the ocean without getting wet.

    GETTING AROUND MALDIVES

    Sea planes and speedboats connect between the main inhibited atolls with some serving only a specific resort. They are well organized and will take reservations. A Sea plane transfer time is estimated at 30 minutes between the North and Southern atoll while a speedboat ride is estimated to be about 1.5 to 3 hours. Fees for the sea plane tickets are estimated to be between USD300 – USD750 per person.

    Portuguese first discovered Maldives in the mid 1500 and was replaced by the Dutch colonist 200 years later. In 1887 the British drove out the Dutch and remained her protector until independence day on 25 July 1965.

    The Maldivian Rufiyaa is the local currency. Notes are in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 while coins are in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50. Tourist need not hold too much local currency as USD and EUR are widely accepted. Some hotels and establishment prefer payment by card instead.

    Electricity standard for Maldives is designed after the British standard of 230 volts at 50Hz.

    Maldives has a total population of about 550,000 persons. Islam is the dominant religion for this country. Maldivians comprised of Southern Indian, Sinhalese and Arab ethnicity.

    The Maldivian cuisine is influenced by Indian and Sri Lankan origins. The culinary experience is a delightful discovery with fresh seafood taking center stage. Dishes such as Mas Huni (a tuna salad) and Garudhiya (fish soup) are a must try for anyone visiting this country.

    January to April is the dry season in Maldives with low humanity and temperatures ranging between 82F-85F. Ocean conditions are also calmest during this time of the year.
