ATTRACTIONS IN MELACCA

• One of the prominent attractions is the A Famosa fortress (built by the colonial Portuguese in 1511). It is one of the oldest surviving European colonial architectural remnants in Asia.
• Nearby is the Stadthuys. A striking red building ( built by the colonial Dutch after defeating the Portuguese). It now serves as a museum showcasing the history of Melacca and its unique position on trade routes in the Straits of Melacca.
• St. Paul’s Hill features the ruins of St. Paul’s Church which dates back to the early 16th century.
• The Melacca Sultanate Palace Museum is also a notable showcase that is rich in the history of the Malay Sultanate. The museum’s architecture is inspired by traditional Malay design that exhibits the royal history and cultural practices.
• The Jonker Street market is famous for its night market with it’s array of local delicacies and handicrafts. Every weekend the street transforms into a lively bazaar where local artisans sell handicrafts, clothing and traditional hand made snacks. Visitors can sample dishes unique to Melacca (chicken rice balls and cendol) at the local restaurants located on Jonker street.
• The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia. It exemplifies the country’s multicultural society and spirituality.
• The picturesque Melacca River offers river boat rides that along the city’s charming riverside architecture and lush greenery.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT MELACCA

The best time of the year to visit Melaka is from March to October. This period offers pleasant weather with daily temperatures ranging from 27C to 32C and minimal rainfall.

Dos –

• Dress Modestly: Cover your shoulders and knees, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques or temples
• Remove Shoes: Take off your shoes before entering homes and certain religious places.

• Pointing with Index Finger: Point with your thumb instead, or use your whole hand
• Touching Heads: Avoid touching anyone’s head, especially children’s, as it’s considered disrespectfu
• Raising Your Voice: Speak calmly and avoid shouting, as it can be seen as aggressive
• Disrespecting Elders: Show deference to elders and those in positions of authority
• Publicly Criticizing the Royal Family: Avoid criticizing the royal family, according to Malaysia Visa
• Ignoring Local Customs: Be mindful of local customs and etiquette, especially in homes and religious places.
