ABOUT TAICHUNG

Taichung City is a vibrant and diverse city located in central Taiwan. Known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful nature and bustling night markets. 

Located in the Taichung basin, the city of Taichung was initially developed from several scattered hamlets helm by the Taiwanese indigenous people. It was intended to be the new capital of Taiwan Province and named “Taiwan-fu” in the late Qing dynastic era between 1887 and 1894.

ATTRACTIONS IN TAICHUNG

• One of the attractions in Taichung is the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. This impressive museum is the first and largest of its kind in Taiwan. It showcases a wide range of artworks from both local and international artists. The museum’s collection includes paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other forms of art for a comprehensive overview of Taiwan’s artistic heritage.
• The Taichung Metropolitan Park is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It features lush greenery, winding walking paths and a serene lake.
• Another attraction in Taichung is the Rainbow Village. This vibrant and colorful community art project was created by a retired soldier who transformed a cluster of old military housing into a whimsical and eye-catching masterpiece. The walls of the buildings are adorned with bright and cheerful murals. The murals depict a variety of subjects ranging from animals and flowers to famous cartoon characters.
• One of the popular markets in Taichung city is the Fengjia Night Market. It is the largest night market in Taiwan. Visitors can sample a wide array of traditional Taiwanese street food, shop for unique souvenirs and clothing.
• The Taichung Confucius Temple is a must visit for those looking for a more traditional cultural experience. This historic temple is dedicated to the great Chinese philosopher Confucius and serves as a cultural and educational center for the local community. The temple complex includes beautifully landscaped gardens, elegant pavilions and ornate shrines.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT TAICHUNG

The best time to visit Taichung is during the fall months of October and November, as well as in the spring time around March and April for pleasant weather and fewer tourist crowd.

The New Taiwan Dollar note is denominated in 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 while coins are denominated in 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50.

Electricity connection in Taiwan is at 110 volts / 60HZ. The standard American power plug design is equipped in all hotels.

Taiwan has a population of 23 million comprising of 4 main ethnic groups – Minnan (from Fujian province), Hakka (from Longyan / Meizhou / Guandong province) and 16 native indigenous groups. The Minnan ethnic group makes up 72% of Taiwan’s population while the Hakka ethnic group makes up 12% of Taiwan population. The city of Taichung has a population of 2.87 million inhabitants which is almost on par with the capital city of Taipei .

Getting around in Taichung is easy on the MTR subway, taxi, Youbikes (bicycle sharing system for short trips). The public bus is available but may not be user friendly to foreign tourist and often is stuck in traffic jams. Taxi rates are reasonable with NTD70 (about EUR2.20) base rate and and NTD5  (about EUR0.16) for every 200 meters distance. The city is safe for tourist to move around at night and solo female travelers would not face any major issues traveling in Taichung.
