ABOUT TAINAN

Tainan City is located in southern Taiwan. It is a historical and cultural hub with a variety of attractions from ancient temples and historic sites to bustling night markets and unique art galleries.

Tainan is Taiwan’s oldest city. The city’s history dates back to the early 17th century. Established by the Dutch in 1624 as Fort Zeelandia, the city became a focal point for trade and cultural exchange. The city’s architecture reflects its diverse heritage and historic structures from various ruling dynasties. It also once served as the political capital for the Qing dynasty.

ATTRACTIONS IN TAINAN

• The Chihkan Tower (also known as Fort Provintia) is a historical site that was built by the Dutch in the 17th century and served as a fort and administrative center during their occupation of Taiwan.
• Another attraction in Tainan is the Anping Tree House. This original structure was built as a warehouse by Tait & Co which is a British trading company in the 19th century. Over time, the building was overgrown with banyan trees, creating a stunning and surreal sight that is now open to the public for tours.
• The Confucius Temple in Tainan is dedicated to the famous Chinese philosopher Confucius and is one of the oldest temples in Taiwan. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and take part in traditional ceremonies and rituals.
• One of the popular night markets in the city is the Garden Night Market which features a wide array of food stalls, game booths and live performances.
• The National Museum of Taiwan Literature is a recommended visit for those interested in Taiwanese literature and history.
• The Hayashi Department Store Art Gallery showcases contemporary art from both local and international artists.
• Tainan has several hot springs resorts that offer a range of spa treatments and relaxation therapies. The Guanziling Hot Spring Resort is most popular in the city.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT TAINAN

The best time of the year to visit Tainan is from October through April. These months offer the perfect combination of comfortable temperature, lower humidity and few rainy days. Tainan coastal city is geographically close to the Tropic of Cancer and is blessed with tropical weather year round. Daily temperatures are at 20C (70F) with the monsoon rains coming in between May to September.

Tainan’s most exciting festivals are: the Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat festival, Anping Tree House Music Festival, Rites Of Spring Festival, Hungry Ghost Festival, Food Festival, City God Festival, Arts Festival, Baguashan Light Festival, Flower Festival, Mazu Pilgrimage Festival and the Tainan Cultural Festival.

Taiwan has a population of 23 million comprising of 4 main ethnic groups – Minnan (from Fujian province), Hakka (from Longyan / Meizhou / Guandong province) and 16 native indigenous groups. The Minnan ethnic group makes up 72% of Taiwan’s population while the Hakka ethnic group makes up 12% of Taiwan population. The city of Tainan has a population of 1.85 million.

Getting around in Tainan is easy on the Taiwan High Speed Rail system, taxi and the excellent inter city bus system. Taxi rates are reasonable with NTD70 (about EUR2.20) base rate and NTD5  (about EUR0.16) for every 200 meters distance.

The city is safe for tourist to move around at night and solo female travelers would not face any major issues traveling in Tainan.
